Jasminum

Jasmine
(Jasminum grandiflorum)
Other Names - Jasmine Absolute, Catalonian Jasmine, Jessamine, Poet's Jasmine, Jati, Queen of the Night, Royal Jasmine, Spanish Jasmine, Yasmin,
Origins - India, Pakistan, and the Himalayas.
Type
Perennial (evergreen).
Hardiness (see References, below) - Zones 8-11.
Bloom - Summer, Fall.
Height
Approx. 15 ft (5 m).
Cultivation
This plant loves Sunny locations. Rich well drained, neutral to mildly acidic soils. This climber needs to grow on trellises, pergolas, or other type of support. Prune in Fall.
Propagation - By stem cuttings, by layering.
Other - Deliciously fragrant, Yasmin (God's gift in Arabic) had long been immortalized

by poets, and other artists. One of the essential plants to grow in Islamic style, and (weather permitting), all other gardens. If you live in lower than Zone 8 area, try growing it in a container (it does well, potted), and bring it indoors, for the Winter months. Jasmine's essential oil has long been used in in perfume production. It is also used in aromatherapy (for easing breathing difficulties, and other conditions that require calming). In the East, women like to fold Jasmine blossoms in their hair, to keep it desirably fragrant. Chinese use jasmine blooms in herbal
teas. Jasmine's captivating scent is also popular in household products, such as candles, room fresheners, etc.
Carolina Yellow Jasmine, although hardy in Zone 7, is actually (Gelsemium sempervirens), and not a true Jasmine, and neither is another popular, Confederate Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides).
