Stinking Iris
(Iris foetidissima)
Other Names - Gladdon, Gladwin Iris, Roast-beef Plant, Stinking Gladwin, Stinking Gladwyn.
Origins - Europe, N. Africa.
Type
Perennial (semi-evergreen).
Hardiness (see References, below) - Zones 5 - 9.
Bloom - Summer.
Fruit - Fall.
Height - Approx. 2 ft (60cm).
Cultivation - This plant prefers shady locations with acidic soils, but it will also tolerate other soils, and locations.
Propagation - By rhizome division; by seeds.
Other - Its common name comes from leaves' beef-like aroma, when rubbed.
Great Fall/Winter accent plant. Perfect for woodland style, gardens.
Caution
Irises, inc. Stinking Iris' rhizomes are toxic if digested by humans, and animals.
